Οι τεχνητές οδοντοστοιχίες, η αλλιώς «μασέλες» είναι μία κινητή προσθετική εργασία που αντικαθιστά μερικά (όταν πρόκειται για μερική οδοντοστοιχία) με μεταλλικά ή αισθητικά άγκιστρα ακριβείας ή όλα (όταν πρόκειται για ολική οδοντοστοιχία) τα φυσικά μας δόντια.

Χωρίζονται σε 3 κατηγορίες :
1. Ολική οδοντοστοιχία : αντικαθιστά το σύνολο των δοντιών σας
2. Μερική οδοντοστοιχία : αντικαθιστά τα ελλείποντα δόντια και στηρίζεται στα φυσικά δόντια με μεταλλικά ή ακρυλικά άγκιστρα
3. Επένθετη οδοντοστοιχία : Μερική ή ολική οδοντοστοιχία που εφαρμόζει πάνω σε οδοντικές ρίζες, ή σε εμφυτεύματα

Πλεονεκτήματα :
1. Χαμηλό κόστος
2. Γρήγορη και εύκολη διαδικασία
3. Ενισχύει την αισθητική του προσώπου
4. Αποκατάσταση μάσησης και ομιλίας

Μειονεκτήματα :
1. Σε περιπτώσεις απορρόφησης των ούλων δημιουργείται πρόβλημα στην συγκράτηση και την σταθερότητα τους
2. Δημιουργείται ελαφρώς δυσκολία στην ομιλία και στην μάσηση μετά την τοποθέτηση και οι ασθενείς χρειάζεται να έχουν υπομονή μέχρι να εξοικειωθούν
3. Οι τεχνητές οδοντοστοιχίες είναι απαραίτητο να ελέγχονται από τον οδοντίατρο τουλάχιστον μία φορά το χρόνο, διότι υφίστανται φθορές και ίσως χρειαστεί να διορθωθούν ή να αντικατασταθούν
4. Απαιτείται προσοχή στον τρόπο που πλένετε τις οδοντοστοιχίες ώστε να μην σπάσουν. Χρησιμοποιείτε νάιλον οδοντόβουρτσα για την αφαίρεση των υπολειμμάτων τροφών σε καθημερινή βάση
